The conversion of Constantine inaugurated the age of imperial Christianity, without which the age of ecumenical councils would have been inconceivable. Constantine convened and presided over the first and most important ecumenical council, at Nicaea, which crafted a statement that would become the touchstone of Christian orthodoxy.
